Legal Services

A highly accomplished commercial and technology lawyer in the betting and gaming sector; transactionally focused with a sharp commercial acumen.

Jonathan advises on legal issues in the UK and wider international gambling industry.
Having spent a decade working in private practice (initially Eversheds Sutherland within its Commercial & IT Group, followed by a move to establish a Technology Media & Telecoms practice at Walker Morris in Leeds), Jonathan then transferred to a senior in-house role within the UK payments sector following his acting as lead lawyer advising VocaLink (now part of Mastercard) on its procurement and development of the switching infrastructure which sits at the heart of the UK Faster Payments Service.
In 2010, as a very accomplished technology and commercial lawyer, Jonathan established his own niche legal consultancy with an emphasis on providing commercial legal advice to clients operating in the technology sector or who are reliant on purchasing technology to operate their business. The foundation of his consultancy was simple:
“Assisting businesses achieve their commercial objectives within a legal framework which is understood, designed to complement the objectives, and focused on striking the right balance between risk mitigation and opportunity generation.”
Since 2010, Jonathan spent a decade acting as senior legal counsel to Inspired Entertainment Group, Playnation (the former “leisure” division spun out of Inspired Entertainment Group in 2013) and expanding to take on work for Gamestec (following its acquisition of Playnation), and Blueprint Games. In performing those roles, Jonathan has developed a substantial knowledge of the gaming industry, both in the UK and in many other major gaming jurisdictions across the world (from China to North and South America and everywhere between). Jonathan was primarily a hands-on transaction focused lawyer responsible for supporting the rapid growth of Inspired’s Virtual division in the UK land-based and digital market together with launching in the Italian, Chinese, and North American markets. He also performed the same role supporting Inspired’s later development and launch of its RGS-based digital content offering to the major UK gambling operators and latterly to North American casino operators. Jonathan also supported Inspired’s entry into land-based Comma 6a/6b VLT market in Italy.
Following Inspired’s divestment of its leisure division to management, Jonathan was asked to continue to support Playnation in developing its land-based AWP and SWP offerings in the UK market (focused on motorway service stations, holiday parks, airports, and High Street AGC offerings) and, following its acquisition by Novomatic Group in 2017, expanded his responsibilities to support Gamestec in transitioning the UK pubs sector towards digital AWP offerings.
As well as acting for Inspired and Playnation Gamestec, Jonathan also provided transactional support Blueprint Group for its digital RGS-delivered content and machines divisions (supplying to land-based UK gaming establishments) and advised Praesepe on a machine acquisition transaction from SGI.
Outside of the UK gambling sector, Jonathan has accumulated a wealth of experience advising SME to FTSE100 corporates in the construction, manufacturing, engineering, high street retail, digital payments, and motorsport space.
It’s not all work though. Jonathan maintains an (un)healthy work-life balance by racing superbikes!
